Hi! I’m Dr. Ken Stanton. I’m a teacher, a father, a husband, a brother, an uncle, an engineer, a business owner, a philosopher, and so much more.
I’ve been an educator for over 20 years, all said. I’ve taught high school math and science at 2 different charter schools. I created and taught in a hybrid vehicle engineering program for graduate (MS & PhD) students. I worked with a team of teaching assistants to lead first-year engineering workshops. I’ve tutored dozens of students back to getting A’s. And I have 100s of students who I keep in touch with and who have become part of my life.
Teaching is my passion, but family is my everything. My wife and baby girl make every day amazing. I now live near my brother and his wife and two kids, and I love being an uncle. Other family are spread out between New York, Virginia, Arizona, and New Hampshire, and I love when I get to see them. I’m blessed to have such an awesome fam!
I can claim about a decade of work as an engineer, including my time as a graduate research assistant in engineering. I’ve worked on a design and test team for a major auto manufacturer to create a now-prolific fuel-saving engine system. As a researcher, I’ve dug into both fuel cell and hybrid vehicle systems and have published on both. A handful of other miscellaneous engineering jobs make an appearance on my resume. And everyone who knows me personally knows I have an engineering mind all the way – I’m logical, methodical, and organized!
My wife and I have our own business that we’ve been running since 2012. It’s evolved from pure health and wellness, to life coaching, to digital products like ebooks and online courses. The life lessons we’ve learned will always be worth more than money, but maybe some day we’ll hit the small-business jackpot and make a lot of money with the biz!
I earned my PhD in 2011 in engineering education by applying motivation theory to explore engineering professors’ drive to be good teachers. I studied a lot of psychology, human learning, and human nature, and it is the foundation of who I am and how I see the world. During my doctoral studies, I lost a friend in a tragic school shooting and got thrown into the political world surrounding such events. I was amazed to learn the parallels between my psychology studies and political theory and feel it was one of the most important learning experiences of my life.
Finally, I love learning. I’ve dug into law, technology, health and wellness, self-defense, parenting, travel, finance, history, drugs and addiction, and more. I know a lot, but also know that there is so much more to see and do, and hence am not afraid to say “I don’t know.” I believe in integrity above all else, that communication makes good relationships, and in making every day better than the last.
